Mister Miracle (vol 2) #13
March 1990

From Agent #027, Chad Malone: "The first frame on page 14 has Mr. Miracle in JLA headquarters leaving Big Barda a message on the telephone, and the telephone is shaped like ambush bug.  It's green, but the antennae are also colored green.  It's a standard character telephone like a Mickey mouse or Bugs Bunny phone, only it is ambush bug."

Which is very similar to all the Bug toys that would later show up in Young Justice!

Secret Origins (second series) #48
April 1990
Keith Giffen - plots and pencils, Robert Loren Fleming - scripter, Bob Lewis - inker, John Costanza - letterer, Tony Tollin - colorist, Michael Eury - editor, Julius Schwartz - goodwill ambassador

The secret origin of Ambush Bug is revealed by Giffen and company: "We Thought Him Up." Nevertheless, the Bug is found hiding at the Home for Forgotten Cartoon Characters, where he is served with papers demanding he come up with a decent origin story... or face the loss of his beloved Cheeks. Ambush Bug convinces a Lord of Order to send him to Heaven, where he suspects Cheeks was sent. The Lord kills him... which does send him to Heaven, where he is reincarnated as a Ninja Turtle. None of which brings him any closer to Cheeks, or to revealing his secret origin.

BUG FACT: Giffen makes heavy use of his photocopied panel process in this story. The other origin stories in this issue are Stanley and his Monster, the Trigger Twins and Rex the Wonder Dog.
