52 #24
October 2006
written by Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison, Greg Rucka, Mark Waid; art breakdowns by Keith Giffen; pencils by Phil Jimenez; inks by Andy Lanning; colors by David Baron; lettering by Pat Brosseau; assistant editors Harvey Richards & Jeanine Schaefer; edited by Stephen Wacker; cover by J.G. Jones & Alex Sinclair

With Superman and the Justice League MIA, the new Firestorm rounds up a brand new Justice League, consisting of himself, Firehawk, Bulleteer, Super-Chief and Ambush Bug. Their first battle ends in disaster as they are caught between an army of cyborg-pirates and Luthor's latest round of gene-therapy heroes... not to mention a fully-armed-and-dangerous Skeets. Unbelievably, this is all done in complete seriousness, except for Ambush Bug's lines. Does this mean that when DC gets George Perez to do a future pin-up of every-Justice-League-member-ever, they'll be forced to include Ambush Bug?

BUG FACT: This is the first appearance of the "New Earth" Ambush Bug. Surprisingly, his demeanor is very much in line with his "classic" stories waaaaay back in Action Comics, DC Comics Presents and his first miniseries. ...Before he morphed into the put-upon, sarcastic loner we've seen since the Son of Ambush Bug series.

Also, Green Arrow, seems to know that Ambush Bug did time in Arkham. So our boy's backstory seems rather intact, post-Infinite Crisis.

Ambush Bug is seen sharing one of the Auctioneer's cells with the Joker and Plastic Man! The image is tiny and indistinct, but probably unmistakable. Upper left, second cell down.

For the record, I'm officially tired of crazy-ass alternate timeline mash-ups that end up with the utterly predictable "surprise" that Mxyzptlk is behind it. This has been done, like, five times in the last five years. Although I did like the creative borrowing of Marvel's Deadpool character to act as the anti-Deathstroke.

There's a caption near the end that refers to Ambush Bug, during an expository sequence: "Darkseid played chess with Ambush Bug. Ambush Bug accidentally destroyed the universe with the 'Ultimate Clapper.'"

First reported by Agent #020, buffycomic.
